Ahead of India's first Test against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, India skipper Rohit Sharma completed his media interactions. Speaking with Jio Cinema, the hitman spoke about the latest trend in cricket, where players are reversing their retirements.
Rohit, who announced his retirement from T20I cricket after winning the T20 World Cup 2024 trophy in Barbados, was asked about re-evaluate his decision, which is when he slammed the growing culture of taking a U-Turn on retirements.
“Retirement has become a joke these days in the world of cricket these days. People announce retirement but then return to play. It hasn’t happened in India, it’s rare here. However, I have been observing players from other countries – they announce retirement but then make a U-turn. So you never really know whether someone has actually retired,”Rohit said on JioCinema.
“My decision is final and I am very clear. It was a perfect time to say goodbye to the format, which I really loved playing. I played 50-over cricket for India, and then directly I played T20 World Cup in 2007. I won then and then this one too (2024 T20 World Cup). Good time to move on,” he said.
Did Rohit Takes A Dig At Stokes, Mooen Ali?
In the last couple of years, several players reversed their decision to play for the country again. Recently, Moeen Ali, who had retired from Test cricket earlier, reversed his decision in 2023 to play Test cricket again. However, Ali announced his retirement again after being not a part of the squad for the upcoming tour against Pakistan.
Ben Stokes is another name who followed the same path as he announced his retirement from ODIs in June 2022 in order to manage his workload. However, he reversed his decision to play the 2023 World Cup.
