Indian cricket veteran Ravichandran Ashwin, who recently announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL), is now set to take a big step in his career by featuring in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL).

According to reports, Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg has personally reached out to Ravichandran Ashwin, opening doors for his debut in the league.

Ashwin Throws Hat In The BBL Ring

Although the BBL 15 draft was released back in June, Greenberg confirmed that discussions with Ashwin began shortly after his IPL exit. Speaking to Cricbuzz, the CEO said he was excited about the possibility of Ashwin playing in Australia.

“To get someone with Ashwin’s credentials and to come over here for the BBL will be great at so many levels. He is a champion cricketer who will bring a lot to the Big Bash and to our cricket summer,” Greenberg stated.

Ashwin himself has expressed interest in exploring different franchise leagues following his IPL retirement. The 38-year-old spinner admitted that he views this new phase as an opportunity to not only showcase his skills but also gain valuable exposure in global leagues. If he signs, this will mark his first appearance as a freelance cricketer in T20 franchise tournaments outside India.

Ashwin Interested In Coaching Role Too

Currently, it remains unclear which of the eight BBL teams Ashwin might represent. However, his arrival is expected to significantly boost the competition’s profile and attract Indian fans to Australia’s premier T20 tournament.

Beyond playing, Ashwin has also discussed his long-term ambition of pursuing coaching roles. He sees the BBL as a platform to sharpen those skills while contributing on the field.
