The alarming reality of child hunger remains one of the most pressing global challenges, exacerbated by resource mismanagement and inefficient systems. In India, this crisis stifles potential, as proper nutrition is non-negotiable for a child's physical and cognitive development.
Deprivation during early stages can lead to irreversible complications. To combat this, India Gate's 'Grains of Hope' initiative has enlisted two iconic Indian athletes, coach Gautam Gambhir and hockey legend P Sreejesh. Leveraging their influence as voices of reason, the campaign aims to drive a collective effort in the fight against hunger.
Gambhir's Strong Stance Against Hunger
Gautam Gambhir, who has been involved in 'Jan Rasoi' program in Delhi during his political career, spoke about the importance of the initiative.
"In my cricketing journey, I have seen thousands of players, they had the talent, skill, work ethic, but could not make it to the top. Why? Because when the stomach is empty, dreams remain unfulfilled. Just like the way you need runs to win a cricket match, to win the game of life, food is required," Gambhir said in the video.
P Sreejesh, part of the Indian team that won the Bronze Medals in the 2020 and 2024 Summer Olympics, outlined the need for nutrition in budding children who hope to play for the country one day.
"Before I was Team India's captain, before I won medals for our country, I was a farmer's son, who valued every grain of food. And as a sportsman, I know food is the fuel, that powers us to play, and win for India. Across India, millions of talented children are being held back, not by lack of dreams, but by lack of nutrition, or hunger," Sreejesh remarked.
The initiative underscores a simple truth that sees elite athletes meticulously track their nutrients for peak performance, while millions of children lack the basic fuel to even pursue their dreams.
The public can contribute by visiting www.indiagategrainsforhope.com, watching the campaign video, and sharing it. For every share, India Gate will provide one meal to a child in need. To date, 'Grains of Hope' has already provided over one lakh meals.
