The Indian Premier League (IPL) is not just about the players who are currently shining on the field, but also about the legends who have left their mark and retired. Many of these former stars have so much cricketing knowledge and experience that they can still contribute to their teams, this time, not as players, but as mentors.

So, take a look at some retired IPL stars who could make excellent team mentors:

1. Suresh Raina

Suresh Raina is one of the biggest names in IPL history and a true CSK legend. The 38-year-old has played 12 seasons with the team and was a key part of their golden era. Raina scored over 5,500 runs in his IPL career and also became first Indian to reach 5,000 runs. Notably, he also took the most catches in the league (107).

Recently, he dropped hints about returning to CSK, not as a player, but possibly as a coach or mentor. With his vast experience and deep connection with the franchise, Raina would be a natural fit to guide CSK’s youngsters in the future.

2. Yuvraj Singh

Yuvraj Singh may have retired, but his aura still lights up the grounds. The former has been often spotted with Gujarat Titans camp, sparking talk that he might take up a mentorship role with them. However, it has not been confirmed.

If that happens, it will be a big boost for GT. Notably, Yuvraj is a proven winner, he has lifted T20 World Cup, ODI World Cup and two IPL trophies. His big-hitting skills and fighting spirit could inspire GT’s young squad, especially players like Shubman Gill.

3. Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin recently hung up his boots after IPL 2025. Notably, he started his IPL journey with CSK and played a huge role in their title wins in 2010 and 2011. Over his stunning career, Ashwin represented several franchises, including Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals, while also briefly captaining Punjab.

It is worth mentioning that Ashwin retires as the fifth-highest wicket-taker in IPL history and is widely respected for his cricketing brain. His tactical mindset and experience under MS Dhoni’s captaincy make him an ideal candidate for a mentorship or coaching role. Whether it is CSK or Rajasthan Royals, Ashwin’s input could shape the future of many budding spinners.

4. AB de Villiers

When it comes to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), one name that instantly comes to mind is AB de Villiers. The South Africa legend retired in 2021 but remains one of the most loved IPL players ever.

Notably, the 41-year-old played 184 matches and scored over 5,100 runs at a strike rate of more than 150. His partnership with Virat Kohli was legendary, including the record-breaking 229-run stand in 2016.

Although ABD has already shown interest in staying connected with RCB in some role, fans are eagerly waiting to see him officially return as a team mentor.
