In a significant development, Prithvi Shaw has officially requested 'No Objection Certificate (NOC)' from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), indicating his intent to represent another state as a 'professional' player. The 25-year-old batter, once hailed as one of India’s brightest young prospects, is seeking a fresh start away from his home state after a prolonged phase of inconsistent performances and off-field issues.

A senior MCA official confirmed the development to The Indian Express, stating, “He has sought NoC from us and we will take decision on it soon.”

It is important to note that, Shaw’s relationship with the Mumbai selectors has steadily deteriorated over the last couple of seasons, largely due to persistent fitness concerns. According to the same reports, Shaw has received interest from two to three other states. If granted the NOC, he could register with another state team for the 2025-26 domestic season.

Falling Out Of Favour With Mumbai

Last year, the star batter was dropped from the Ranji Trophy squad following poor fitness reports. The team management had informed the MCA that his body fat percentage was high. ðHowever, despite repeated warnings, Shaw was unable to meet the required fitness demands.

The MCA’s selection committee reportedly also told Shaw that unless he shed excess weight, he would not be considered for selection. Consequently, he was left out of the Vijay Hazare Trophy squad in December (2024) as well.

Underwhelming Domestic And IPL Campaigns

Shaw’s recent performances have done little to support his case. In the recent T20 Mumbai League 2025, the star player failed to make any impact with the bat. He managed 137 runs at an average of 27.40 with just one half-century in five games. During the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he managed only 197 runs in nine matches, at an average of just 21.88.

His IPL 2024 stint with Delhi Capitals (DC) also failed to change his fortunes. Playing just 8 games, Shaw scored 198 runs at an average of 24.75 and strike rate of 163.63. Following this, DC released him ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, where he remained unsold, despite setting a base price of ₹75 lakh.

Shaw’s early promise on the international stage also appears to have faded. Having made an explosive Test debut in 2018 with a century, he has since played only five Tests, and made 339 runs at an average of 42.37.
