Travis Head fuels motivation into Australian side [Source: Getty]
Travis Head has advised his team, Australia, to move on from the heartbreaking defeat at the World Test Championship 2025 final vs South Africa. Now, with a new WTC cycle starting, Head wants the team to focus ahead, not behind.
Australia, the defending WTC champions, fell short against Temba Bavuma and co. at Lord’s. South Africa chased down 282 runs to win their maiden ICC WTC title by 6 wickets. That marked the end of Australia’s campaign in the 2023-2025 cycle.
Travis Head Wants Australia To Bounce Back From WTC Loss
The new WTC 2025-2027 cycle has officially kicked in. Australia’s next challenge begins on Wednesday with a 3-match Test series against the West Indies in the Caribbean. The first Test will be played at Kensington Oval in Barbados.
Ahead of the game, Travis Head talked to ICC and motivated his team to forget about the past and focus on the new challenge. Head believes the quick turnaround is actually a good thing. While the WTC final loss was hurtful, moving on is the wise choice for the Aussies.
"We didn't play well (against South Africa) and it's unfortunate. We put two years of hard work into one week and didn't quite go to plan and the opposition played really well, so there's another motivation. We've got two more years to build, and this is another first look at it so I think if you dwell on it for too long or if you look back you forget about what's moving forward," Head said.
"As hard as that is, we play so much cricket and are so used to that but of course we care and of course it's not ideal but at the end of the day you can't change it so you have to move on you have to get back on the horse and you have to play good cricket. I think a lot of guys are wanting to do that we've had a little bit of time to reflect and I've got time to prep and we're going to another Test series that we're hopeful to play well in," he added.
Australia will be missing 2 big names in the first Test, Steve Smith is still recovering from a finger injury, and Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped. Their replacements are teenager Sam Konstas and experienced batter Josh Inglis.
Australia To Tour West Indies In Historic Series
The Australia Tour of West Indies 2025 kicks off with the first Test on June 25 at Kensington Oval, Barbados, marking the start of a new World Test Championship cycle for both sides. The second and third Tests will be played at St George's and Kingston, respectively.
The tour includes 3 Tests and 5 T20Is, with live streaming available in India on FanCode and coverage across major global networks.
