Indian pace ace Jasprit Bumrah delivered a memorable five-wicket haul against England in the first innings at Headingley on Sunday (June 22). He ended with outstanding figures of 5/83 in 24.4 overs, was left visibly frustrated during England’s innings after three chances off his bowling were dropped. Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, and Harry Brook were all given reprieves by Jaiswal in the slips. To compound matters, Bumrah had also bowled out Brook for a duck, only to be denied by a no-ball call.

Jasprit Bumrah On Dropped Catches

Despite the setbacks, Jasprit Bumrah kept his composure and struck at regular intervals, almost single-handedly halting England’s momentum on a day otherwise dominated by the hosts. Speaking after the day’s play, Bumrah addressed the missed opportunities with maturity and  downplayed any notion of blame or frustration.

“Just for a second (there’s disappointment), but you cannot sit and cry about it. You have to move forward with the game,” Bumrah said in the post-match press conference.

"I try not to take it too far in my head and forget it. A lot of them are new to the game, and for the first time, it is hard to see the ball here. Nobody is dropping catches intentionally, and it is part and parcel of the game. They will learn from it.”

He added that as a senior player, it was important not to add pressure on the youngsters.

“I do not want to create a scene and put more pressure on them, like I am kicking the ball or something,”ehe said with a smile, highlighting the importance of team harmony in high-pressure situations.

Bumrah Reaches SENA Milestone

Bumrah’s five-wicket haul was his 10th in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) countries, making him the first Indian bowler to achieve this landmark. This performance also saw Bumrah equal Kapil Dev’s tally of 12 five-wicket hauls in away Tests.

England, despite the dropped chances, were bowled out for 465, just six runs short of India’s first innings score of 471. Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers as none of the other Indian pacers managed to consistently trouble the English batters.

In their second innings, India reached 90/2 at stumps on a rain-affected Day 3, with KL Rahul and Shubman Gill at the crease. The visitors now hold a 96-run lead heading into Day 4, with the match delicately poised.
