Pakistani Legend Ridicules PCB For Latest Appointments Post Horrible World Cup Run

Following a dismal outing in the recently concluded ODI World Cup 2023, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) made a slew of forced changes to their coaching department. The decision to onboard home-grown coaches was made by the management which resulted in the departure of head coach Grant Bradburn, team director Mickey Arthur, and batting coach Andrew Puttick.

Furthermore, the calls for an immediate change in the leadership also began growing louder. Babar Azam’s captaincy came under heavy scrutiny. Subsequently, he was compelled to step down as a captain across all formats thus creating a power vacuum.

Eventually, Shan Masood and Shaheen Afridi were announced as the Test and T20I captains, respectively. Meanwhile, PCB is yet to announce the national team's ODI skipper.

However, the PCB’s move to elect Shan Masood as the Test skipper did not sit so well with Javed Miandad. The former legendary batter opined that Sarfaraz Ahmed was a more capable leader to lead the national side instead of the newly appointed Shan Masood.

“It is clear that Sarfaraz is a very seasoned cricketer and has done well as captain before for Pakistan and if he had been made captain it would have been vital for the team in Australia which is a tough place to tour." Sarfaraz Ahmed should not only be included in the team against Australia, but due to his experience, he should have been the captain," opined  Miandad.

Moreover, he was also left baffled after learning about the appointments of Wahab Riaz, Muhammad Hafeez, Umar Gul, and Saeed Ajmal. Miandad stressed that these individuals have already played cricket with most of the players in recent times and emphasized the need for an age gap to foster self-respect between the players and the coaches.

"I don't see any logic behind bringing in players as selectors, coaches and Director of Cricket who have played with most of the current players."

Pakistan have a long-standing tradition of hiring foreign coaches. But so far the strategy has not worked in their favour as the 1992 Champions still look to break into the semi-final stage, a feat which they have not achieved since the 2011 World Cup edition.
