Cricket West Indies formally announced that Obed McCoy will replace Matthew Forde in the West Indies squad for the remainder of the T20I series against England. Forde injured his left thigh during training and has been ruled out for the remaining 2 T20Is.
West Indies have already lost the 5-game T20I series against England after they dropped the 3rd T20I held at Gros Islet in St Lucia. The hosts succumbed to 145/8 in the first innings, and Sam Curran’s blistering 41 off 26 balls steered England to a narrow victory 3-wicket victory. With that, the visitors secure an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-game series.
Matthew Forde ruled out with thigh injury
Meanwhile, West Indies were jolted with a major injury concern when Andre Russell was ruled out of the T20I series with an ankle injury. The health concerns only widened as right arm pacer Matthew Forde was rested from the 3rd T20I with a niggle.
On Friday, Cricket West Indies confirmed that Forde, who won player of the series in ODI leg, sustained an injury on his left thigh during a training session at Gros Islet on November 13.
After being evaluated by doctors, the team management reached the conclusion that Forde was not fit enough to participate in the remaining 2 games. Hence, pacer Obed McCoy was added to the 15-member squad as an injury replacement.
McCoy was initially sidelined with an injury he sustained during the CPL 2024 edition. However, the board deemed him fit to challenge England for the remainder of the series.
With West Indies pride at stake, the 5-game series will resume on November 16 at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium at Gros Islet, St Lucia.
Reece Topley also ruled out with a knee injury
England pacer Reece Topley took a blow on his knee during the first T20I against West Indies and limped off the field in disappointment. After evaluation, England Cricket confirmed that Topley had been ruled out for the series and will head back to the UK for further treatment. While the board expressed empathy with the pacer, they haven’t announced a replacement yet.
