In a bold decision, Cricket West Indies imposed a two-match ban on Alzarri Joseph after the latter stormed out of the field following a conflict with captain Shai Hope over field placement. Joseph went off the field during the third ODI against England, forcing West Indies to field with ten players.
West Indies won the third ODI against England by a comprehensive margin of eight wickets leading to a series victory. However, the host's dominance was overshadowed by a controversial incident involving Alzarri Joseph and skipper Shai Hope.
In the fourth over of the first inning, Joseph was miffed with Shai Hope ignoring his inputs in field placement. His frustration led to an ugly outburst. While the bowler delivered a sensational wicket maiden over, he stormed off the field in absolute anger. Joseph stormed straight to the dressing room before coach Daren Sammy acted as a pacifier and convinced him to return.
CWI punishes Alzarri Joseph for controversial outburst
Following the incident, Cricket West Indies took notice of Alzarri Joseph’s misconduct and upon discussion with senior coaching staff, the board announced a two-match suspension. In a statement, CWI Director of Cricket, Miles Bascombe, noted that Joseph violated CWI’s core values and given the seriousness of the matter, they had to take a tough call.
"Alzarri's behaviour did not align with the core values that Cricket West Indies upholds. Such conduct cannot be overlooked, and we have taken decisive action to ensure the gravity of the situation is fully acknowledged."
Not only that, Alzarri Joseph also issued an apology to fans and captain Shai Hope, admitting that his passion got the better of him. Having said that, Joseph will now miss the upcoming two games of the T20I series against England.
"I recognise that my passion got the best of me. I have personally apologized to Captain Shai Hope, my teammates and management. I also extend my sincerest apologies to the West Indies fans—I understand that even a brief lapse in judgment can have a far-reaching impact, and I deeply regret any disappointment caused," Joseph said.
CWI reaffirmed its commitment to foster a culture that holds respect, integrity, and discipline to the highest level.
Sammy condemns Joseph’s actions
West Indies head coach Daren Sammy didn’t mince his words calling Alzarri Joseph’s actions unacceptable. He explained that everyone is friends in the team and share mutual respect. But these kinds of public outburst stands against the culture Sammy is trying to preach. He promised to hold the difficult conversation with both parties and ensure such incidents are not repeated in the future.
