Team India overwhelmed hosts South Africa in the series-deciding fourth T20I played out on November 15 at the iconic Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma played starring roles with the bat before Arshdeep Singh made the new ball count to set up India’s emphatic 3-1 series win.
Here’s the timeline of how SA vs IND panned out in Johannesburg:
SA vs IND Highlights: Samson, Abhishek Lay Out Early Fury In Powerplay Overs
Sanju Samson overcame his successive ducks with a blazing start in the powerplay overs alongside his opening partner Abhishek Sharma. Both Samson and Abhishek collectively smeared 73 runs from the first six overs until the latter nicked one towards wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen off Lutho Sipamla.
The 24-year-old, having launched a couple of boundaries and four sixes in his whirlwind 18-ball 36 at the top, made his way back to the dugout at the edge of the sixth over to make way for number three batter Tilak Varma into the crease.
SA vs IND Highlights: Tilak Varma, Samson Unleash Centuries In Record Partnership
At 73-1 in 5.5 overs, unbeaten opener Sanju Samson and number three Tilak Varma teamed up to muscle 210 runs for the second wicket from just 85 deliveries. Their gung-ho approach throughout the innings helped India mount a colossal 283-1 from 20 overs, thus marking the fifth highest T20I team total in history and India’s second largest in the space of a month.
Samson’s dead-eyed tonking fetched him his third T20I century and the second of the series, as he blazed his way to an unbeaten 109 from 56 balls with six boundaries and nine sixes. Varma also notched up a century off his own to list his second successive 100-plus score, and finished the innings with 120* to his name off 47 balls. Moreover, the young left-hander glittered his raging knock with nine boundaries and 10 booming sixes.
SA vs IND Highlights: Arshdeep Singh Gets The New Ball Moving At The Top
Defending 284 for a win, Indian new ball seamer Arshdeep Singh knocked over South African opener Reeza Hendricks, got Proteas skipper Aiden Markram caught out by Ravi Bishnoi, and had Heinrich Klaasen plumb in front for a first ball duck, all in the space of his first two overs of the run-chase.
Amidst Arshdeep’s three-wicket opening burst, Hardik Pandya also got the key scalp of Ryan Rickelton as South Africa crashed to 10-4 by the end of three overs.
SA vs IND Highlights: Spinners Worsen South African Misery As IND Claim Big Win
Tristan Stubbs and David Miller carved out 86 runs together for the fifth wicket to lift South Africa from 10-4 to 96-5. Miller, who tallied an uncharacteristic 27-ball 36 in a big chase, was eventually holed out by Tilak Varma at long on off Varun Chakravarthy (2-42).
Fellow Indian spinners Ravi Bishnoi (1-28) and Axar Patel (2-6) also picked up key wickets in the backend of the innings to envelop the entire Proteas line-up for just 148 in 18.2 overs. Team India seized a huge 135-run win to clinch the four-match T20I series by a 3-1 margin.
