As India got crucified in the 3-game home Test series against New Zealand, former cricketer Irfan Pathan shifted focus on the importance of domestic cricket. Pathan indirectly targeted Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for skipping domestic events, which probably led to their failures in the Test series.
New Zealand humiliated India like never before to register a series sweep victory in India, a feat no team managed to achieve in the history of the Test format. After dominating the first two Tests in Bengaluru and Pune, the visitors stunned the hosts to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in the final Test in Mumbai. Kiwi spinners defended 147 runs to steal a 25-run victory, with Ajaz Patel picking up twin fifers.
Irfan Pathan takes indirect dig on Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma
That being said, the two biggest disappointments of the humiliating Test series were seniors Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Barring a single 50 each, the duo gifted their crucial wickets at the worst possible stage each time to put New Zealand on top. Meanwhile, in a tweet, Irfan Pathan made an indirect dig to call out Rohit and Virat’s lack of readiness and match practice.
He revealed how his big brother Yusuf Pathan reviewed the domestic structure and found multiple loopholes. Irfan first shed light on the lack of rank turners in domestic tournaments. Besides, he added that senior players are missing from the domestic scene, which can have a negative impact in the long run.
While Irfan Pathan didn’t name anyone, the dig was directed towards Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as the duo chose to skip Duleep Trophy ahead of the Bangladesh series. And this lack of importance to local tournaments perhaps exposed their lack of preparations on turning pitches.
Rohit promises to review his shortcomings
After a series sweep in Mumbai, Indian captain Rohit Sharma admitted flaws in his batting technique. While he hasn’t lost faith in his defence, the skipper acknowledged the need to improve some aspects of his technique against spin. Not only that, Rohit took full responsibility for the series loss and confessed that as a leader, this is the lowest point of his career.
