The Indian batting lineup crumbled under pressure as the Kiwi spinners ran riot throughout the series to inflict an embarrassing 3-0 whitewash. The Rohit Sharma led side failed to deliver the goods and now face an uphill battle as they have to defeat the Aussies, 4-0 to qualify for WTC finals.
One of the major issues of the series was captain Rohit Sharma's dismal performance. The Indian skipper failed against the Kiwi pacers and could only register 94 runs in 3 matches as he saw his team stoop to an all-time low at home. The opening batter had only one fifty-plus score throughout the series as the New Zealand bowlers always had answers to Rohit's aggressive style of play.
In the second innings of the 3rd Test, India needed Rohit to play with a bit of caution, but he went for the glory shot and threw his wicket away. After the loss in Mumbai, he attended the post-match presser and admitted his mistakes.
Rohit took all the blame on himself, while mentioning that he still has a lot to learn as the game is evolving.
"I haven't lost faith in my defence. I didn't bat well in these two series, but as you grow, you evolve as a batter. I'm trying to do that. I will relook at my game."
India failed to chase down 147
India need a paltry 147 to win the Mumbai Test match but they couldn't cross the line and failed to win the match by 25 runs. Rohit Sharma departed early and with him, the entire batting lineup crumbled as the likes of Virat Kohli, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill all went back cheaply.
The only saving grace was Rishabh Pant who once again scored a fifty in this Test match and kept India alive in the chase. However, once he went back, there was no coming back as india lost the match and the series.
