India Test and ODI captain Rohit Sharma is expected to miss the first Test of the upcoming tour to Australia due to the birth of his second child, according to speculations. While the reports cite personal reasons for his absence, the timing comes right after a disappointing series defeat against New Zealand.
On November 3, India were handed a rare series loss by New Zealand, losing all three matches at home. This embarrassing defeat saw the New Zealand team create history in India by beating hosts by 25 runs at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The third and final match was particularly hard to swallow, as India failed to chase down a modest target of 147 runs. New Zealand star spinner Ajaz Patel was the star performer as he took 10 wickets in the match and helping New Zealand dominate against India's batting line-up.
Following the third match defeat, Rohit Sharma addressed the media. When a reporter asked about his availability for the first Test against Australia, the 37-year-old expressed uncertainty about participating in the Perth Test.
“I am not sure at this point about taking part in the Perth Test,” he said.
In his absence, Jasprit Bumrah will step in as captain, as he has been named Rohit Sharma's deputy for the tour.
Rohit Sharma Struggle Against New Zealand
This loss marked a low point for Rohit, who struggled throughout the series, scoring only 94 runs in 6 innings with a top score of solitary 52 in the second innings of the first Test in Bengaluru. He also struggled as the captain, as he was the second Indian captain to be whitewashed at home.
Rohit Sharma and co. will now head to Australia for a five-match Test series. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is set to begin on November 22 at Optus Stadium, Perth.
