It turned out to be an eventful Sunday as Northern Superchargers women gathered their first The Hundred Women's 2025 title, while Nitish Rana did an outstanding job with the bat in the Delhi Premier League 2025 final. Additionally, the BCCI is targeting some significant amounts for the upcoming jersey sponsorship, while Tamim Iqbal is all set to run in the BCB elections.
Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news stories that emerged on Sunday, August 31.
Northern Superchargers Lift Maiden Hundred Women's Title
It was a day to remember and, in fact, a season to remember for the Northern Superchargers women's side, who earned their first-ever Women's Hundred title in the 2025 edition after a seven-wicket victory over Southern Brave Women at the iconic Lost Cricket Ground in London. Nicola Carey was the star woman for the Superchargers with a 35-run not-out knock, while Annabel Sutherland supported her exceedingly well, also playing an unbeaten knock of 28 runs as Superchargers won comfortably while chasing 116, which they did in just 88 deliveries as they still had 12 deliveries and seven wickets to spare.
KL Rahul As DC Captain?
A report circulating on social media suggests that the Delhi Capitals team in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 is considering assigning the captaincy duties to wicket-keeper batter KL Rahul. Currently, Axar Patel is the captain of the side, and according to a report by News24, the management is exploring other options with the wicket-keeping batter likely to get the nod ahead of the next season. Also in contention is Faf du Plessis, who has emerged as a likely contender for the captaincy spot in the side. For the uninitiated, the Delhi side didn't have a great season, finishing fifth on the table with seven wins in 14 games, losing six of their matches.
BCCI's New Sponsorship Hunt
An Economic Times report has mentioned that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), following the exit of Dream11 as the jersey sponsor, is reportedly targeting ₹452 crore for a three-year deal, where car manufacturer Toyota has emerged as the top contender for the sponsorship deal. As per further details, it has been mentioned that the BCCI is seeking ₹7.5 crore per bilateral match, while they're looking at ₹1.5 crore for all the ICC and ACC fixtures. It is worth mentioning that the Indian cricket team risks playing without a sponsor for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, as Dream11 had to withdraw its support after a recent government bill.
Nitish Rana Inspires West Delhi Lions To DPL Crown
At the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, Nitish Rana took his side, the West Delhi Lions, to the Delhi Premier League 2025 title with an outstanding 79-run not-out knock off 49 balls as he smashed seven sixes on the way where the West Delhi side chased down 174 in just 18 overs, as Rana was ably supported by Hrithik Shokeen (42* off 27 balls). The game looked largely in the Lions' control, as they did not take anything for granted, with Rana staying until the end, taking his team to the championship title in the DPL 2025 final.
Tamim Iqbal's Run For BCB Elections
In another interesting development, former Bangladeshi batter Tamim Iqbal has revealed that he is set to run in the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) elections for the role of a director in the governing body. Furthermore, he mentioned that the role of President is not in his direct sight, but he aspires to become one after getting elected to the board of directors.
