The Mumbai Indians Women franchise has named former Australia cricketer Lisa Keightley as the new head coach of the team for next year’s Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 season. Keightley is set to replace ex-English cricketer Charlotte Edwards, even though the latter helmed the franchise to a WPL win earlier this year under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur.
Notably, as an Australian player, Keightley was part of the 1997 and 2005 World Cup winning squads. Since her playing retirement, the former wicketkeeper-batter has coached teams like Australia, England as well as Perth Scorchers in the WBBL.
Champion replaces champion as MI Women name new coach
Reigning WPL champions Mumbai Indians Women have roped in former Australia wicketkeeper-batter and multi-World Cup winner Lisa Keightley as the new head coach, replacing England’s Charlotte Edwards in the process.
Expressing her excitement in joining the Harmanpreet Kaur-led team, Keightley said:
“It’s an honour to join the Mumbai Indians, a team that has set the benchmark in the WPL.”
Lisa Keightley is one of the rare coaches who has coached both, the Australia and England international teams. In franchise cricket, she has coached Perth Scorchers in the WBBL and the Northern Superchargers Women team in England’s The Hundred.
Nonetheless, the Mumbai Indians Women franchise will start out the WPL 2026 season next year as defending champions, considering they defeated Delhi Capitals in the final of the 2025 edition of the tournament back in March.
Mumbai Indians, under Harmanpreet Kaur, is already the most decorated WPL franchise in history, having won two titles in the three seasons played so far.
