Shreyas Iyer to lead India A in three-ODIs vs Australia A [Source: AFP]
On September 25, the BCCI announced the India A and Rest of India (ROI) squads for upcoming tournaments. India A will face Australia A in a three-match ODI series starting September 30 in Kanpur, while the ROI team will play the Irani Cup against Ranji Trophy 2024-25 winners Vidarbha in Nagpur from October 1.
Shreyas Iyer has been named captain of the India A side for the ODIs, with Tilak Varma as his deputy. The squads feature several young players who have earned their call-ups after strong performances in the IPL 2025 season.
Shreyas Iyer takes fitness break from Red-ball cricket
However, Shreyas Iyer will not feature in the Irani Cup. While it was earlier unclear, the BCCI has now confirmed that he has decided to take a six-month break from red-ball cricket. After undergoing back surgery in the UK, he has recently faced recurring spasms and stiffness during longer formats. To avoid aggravating his condition, he has opted to focus on recovery, endurance, and fitness training.
Notably, his decision also saw him withdraw from the second unofficial Test against Australia A earlier this week.
In his absence, Rajat Patidar has been appointed captain of the Rest of India squad, with Ruturaj Gaikwad serving as vice-captain. Patidar recently led Central Zone in the Duleep Trophy, making him a natural choice for leadership.
