Mumbai Indians etched their name in Women’s Premier League history with a thrilling eight-run victory over Delhi Capitals in the 2025 final. Defending a modest 150, MI’s bowlers struck gold early, dismissing DC’s explosive openers Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma within the powerplay.
The Capitals never recovered, limping to 141/9 as MI’s disciplined attack capitalized on the pressure. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur’s anchoring 66 earlier proved decisive, while all-rounders Nat Sciver-Brunt and Hayley Matthews shone yet again.
Charlotte Edwards Reveals Turning Point Of WPL 2025 Final
Notably, after the match, MI head coach Charlotte Edwards pinpointed the early dismissals of Lanning and Shafali as the catalyst for victory.
“150, we knew we were a little bit light, but in a final, it's always worth a little bit more. Shafali didn't come out like she normally does, and I knew straightaway that potentially we were in with a chance, because if we could get her wicket.”
Edwards further noted DC’s uncharacteristic tentativeness which helped MI bagged the win much easily. She revealed how Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma were obstacles in their path of winning many matches.
“It probably fell in our hands a little bit that we were a bit short, and potentially they went about it a bit slower than they normally do. The opening partnership of Lanning and Shafali has been our curse over the last few years, if I'm honest, so I was really pleased to see the back of those two batters early. It was a real team performance.”
Harmanpreet’s Leadership And Hayley-Nat’s Heroics
Edwards also reserved high praise for Harmanpreet’s match-defining knock which was a major part of MI's win.
“She's been really calm. She's deeply competitive, so clearly she wanted to win another title here, and she did everything in her power to do that with the innings she played. She's great around the group, she brings out the best in our young players, and works brilliantly with all our overseas and experienced players.”
Despite a gruelling schedule, Edwards hailed her squad’s endurance and showered her praise and pride for the whole team.
“To play four games in six days, yeah, I mean, it's been fantastic to see how the players have backed those performances up, and to come out here on the big stage and still give that energy to the performance, you know, I'm truly proud.”
With the thrilling WPL final win, MI reaffirmed their dominance bagging their second WPL title after RCB's win in 2024 and will look forward to sealing another dominance in the 2026 season.
