The Pakistan Cricket Board recently announced major changes to the Pakistan Super League. The league will expand from six teams to eight teams starting from the 2026 season. This move aims to grow the league, attract more fans, and increase revenue.
Amid this expansion, the Tareen Group, which previously owned Multan Sultans, has reportedly decided to take part in the bidding process for the new PSL teams. The group has already submitted all required documents. If they pass the technical review, they will be allowed to join the open bidding on January 8 at the Islamabad Convention Centre.
The connection between Multan Sultans and the PSL came to an end after ongoing disagreements between the franchise owner Ali Tareen and league officials.
Over time, Ali Tareen openly criticised the management and structure of the PSL through interviews, podcasts, and social media posts. He even shared a video where he tore up a notice sent by the board and made sarcastic comments. These actions caused serious tension between both sides.
Due to this situation, all PSL franchises except Multan Sultans were offered new contracts with revised fees, and they accepted the terms. Talks with Multan Sultans did not succeed. Ali Tareen later shared a message online saying he preferred to walk away with dignity rather than continue under pressure. He also sent an email to the authorities explaining his position.
New PSL teams attract interest from ex-Multan Sultans owners
Despite these events, the Tareen Group has shown interest in returning to the league through a new team, according to Pakistan media.
Notably, the group is among 12 companies that submitted bid documents. Once Ali Tareen is officially removed from the owners list after December 31, the group will be allowed to bid under PSL rules.
PSL auction set for January 8
The PCB will review all bids and announce qualified bidders on December 27. Successful bidders will move to the final auction on January 8, 2026. Winners will also select a home city from options such as Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Sialkot, Hyderabad, Gilgit, and Muzaffarabad.
The expanded PSL season will run from March 26 to May 3, 2026, marking the first-ever eight-team edition and opening new opportunities for local and overseas players.
