The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has once again decided to further extend the deadline for the bids for two new teams, as they look to extend the Pakistan Super League (PSL) to an eight-team tournament from the forthcoming season of 2026. Having initially set the deadline to December 15 and extending it to December 22, they have pushed it to December 24 now as the final date of receiving bids.
Why is the deadline further extended?
The first time the PCB decided to give an extra week to the interested parties to put their bids in was due to the growing interest from the USA, Europe and the Middle-East, as revealed by the PCB chair Mohsin Naqvi.
"Witnessing growing interest from Europe, the USA, the Middle East and beyond in acquiring new HBL PSL teams, we have decided to extend the bid submission deadline by one week to 22 December 2025," Naqvi had said.
This time around, according to Geo Super, they have given two extra days due to the bank holidays on the weekend coming in the middle of the pushed window.
The player auction for PSL 11 is expected to take place on January 8. It was delayed by a day when Naqvi first moved the deadline and it remains to be seen if also moves with the new bid submission date.
This is the second time that the number of teams in the league are increasing after it started with five teams in 2016. The last time a team was added to the tournament to make it a six team league was in 2018. Alongside two new teams, PCB has also extended their contracts with five of the six previous franchise owners in the league.
