Multan Sultans owner Ali Tareen Khan has stepped down as owner of the PSL franchise after a dispute with PCB. He shared a goodbye message on social media to confirm his departure.
PSL is undergoing a reformation ahead of the next season, as all franchises are being re-evaluated after a systematic audit. All teams will have to sign the renewal contract as per the new valuation.
However, Multan Sultans didn’t receive a renewal offer after a tiff between owner Ali Tareen Khan and PCB.
Ali Tareen steps down as Multan Sultans owner
The Multan Sultans franchise, originally bought for PKR 1.1 billion, has reportedly been revalued at about PKR 850 million, making it the only PSL team to lose value.
Despite this lower valuation, Tareen was told to pay the old, higher fee + 25% of that amount to renew, per PSL renewal terms. However, Tareen argued this is unfair and financially unsustainable.
This led to a standoff, and as a result, Sultans were among the few not initially offered the new contract.
Amid the drama, Ali Tareen has officially decided to step down as Multan Sultans owner. He thanked the fans and described leading the franchise as one of the greatest honours of his life.

Tareen also paid tribute to his late uncle, Alamgir Tareen, who strongly believed in promoting South Punjab through sports and community building.
Despite facing financial losses during his time as owner, Tareen revealed that he never considered leaving because of money. However, he made it clear that he could not continue if it meant sacrificing his principles.
Notably, Multan Sultans has not yet been disbanded as a franchise. It is expected to have different ownership after Tareen's exit is finalised.
Ali Tareen previously tore PCB’s legal notice
Before the renewal drama, Ali Tareen dramatically tore up a legal notice from the PCB that threatened termination of his franchise agreement. He accused the board of not listening to franchise concerns and handling criticism poorly.
Tareen also threatened legal action if the board did not address his renewal concerns or recognise his valuation arguments.
However, it seems his mood has changed, as Ali Tareen Khan has officially decided to exit PSL.
