Australia’s preparations for the T20 World Cup 2026 have received a worrying blow, as hard-hitting batter Tim David has suffered another hamstring injury. The injury happened during a Big Bash League (BBL) match between Hobart Hurricanes and Perth Scorchers on Friday, December 26.

Tim David was playing an excellent innings and had scored 42 runs from just 28 balls. However, while running between the wickets, he suddenly felt pain in his hamstring. He looked clearly upset and uncomfortable and decided to walk off the field after advice from the medical staff.

Another hamstring setback for Tim David

David later said he felt something while trying to run a second run and chose not to push himself further to avoid making the injury worse.

"I just felt a little bit of something when I was trying to come back for two. It's not ideal, but I didn't want to make it worse and had full faith in the boys to get us home. We'll wait and see," David told Channel 7.

Notably, this injury is especially concerning since it is the second hamstring problem David has suffered this year. Earlier in 2025, he picked up a serious hamstring strain during IPL. That injury forced him to miss almost two months of cricket, including RCB’s strong playoff run.

The team took a cautious approach with his recovery and he only returned later during Australia’s T20I series against West Indies. Even then, he managed to play only three out of five matches.

Nathan Ellis expresses concern over teammate’s Injury

Meanwhile, Hobart Hurricanes captain Nathan Ellis admitted he was “shattered” by the news.

"You know, I'd be lying if I didn't say there's a few of us with one eye on the World Cup as well," Ellis said. "So as a mate, first and foremost, I'm shattered he potentially might miss a few games for the Hurricanes.

"But I'm hopeful that we'll do all the right things and hopefully, potentially, get him right for the back-end of the tournament ... and beyond with the Australian colours in the World Cup," he added.

The tournament is scheduled to begin on February 7, 2026, and will be played in India and Sri Lanka. With limited time before the T20 World Cup, David’s recovery will be closely watched.

The Hurricanes have confirmed that David will undergo scans to find out how serious the injury is. The results will help decide how long he might be out of action.

Why Tim David's injury is a setback for Australia

Notably, Tim David is important for Australia due to his explosive T20 batting and match-winning ability. The year 2025 has been outstanding for him in T20Is, as he scored 395 runs in 10 innings at a strike rate close to 200, hitting 36 sixes.

With Australia’s middle order struggling for form and others being injury-prone, his fitness is vital ahead of the World Cup.
