Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur has created a new record in international cricket. She has gone past former Australian captain Meg Lanning to become the most successful captain in women’s T20 International matches in terms of wins. 

This historic achievement came during the third T20I match between India and Sri Lanka, played in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday. India won the match by eight wickets and also sealed the five-match series with a 3-0 lead.

With this victory, Harmanpreet now has 77 wins as a T20I captain from 130 matches. She has faced 48 losses, while five matches ended without a result. Her win percentage stands at 58.46. Meg Lanning, who previously held the record, achieved 76 wins from just 100 matches. Her record includes 18 losses, one tied game, and five matches with no result.

The list of the most successful captains in women’s T20 Internationals includes some of the biggest names in the sport. Harmanpreet Kaur leads the chart with 77 wins, followed by Meg Lanning with 76 wins.

Notably, Meg Lanning still holds an outstanding win percentage of over 76 and has guided Australia to four T20 World Cup titles. 

In the match against Sri Lanka, India chose to field first after winning the toss. Sri Lanka struggled to build momentum and managed 112 runs for the loss of seven wickets in 20 overs. Imesha Dulani, Hasini Perera, and Kavisha Dilhari were the only batters to cross the 20-run mark. Deepti Sharma delivered a landmark performance by taking three wickets. Meanwhile, Renuka Singh impressed as well with four wickets.

During the chase, Shafali Verma played a stunning unbeaten knock of 79 runs, supported by Harmanpreet’s steady contribution. India comfortably reached the target in just 13.2 overs.

As India move forward, Harmanpreet’s leadership continues to inspire generations. With the next Women’s T20 World Cup scheduled in the UK next year, she has the opportunity to guide India to their first title in this format. 

Having already lifted the World Cup in the 50-over format, this will be the next major challenge in her captaincy journey, where she will aim to add another historic trophy to India’s growing legacy in women’s cricket.
