MS Dhoni will reportedly feature in the IPL 2026 season for the CSK franchise. Discarded Test stars Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shreyas Iyer experienced contrasting fortunes on Day 1 of the second semifinal of the 2025 Duleep Trophy season. In other news, wily Indian leg spinner Amit Mishra has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.

Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Thursday, September 4.

MS Dhoni To Play IPL 2026: Report

Former Indian cricketer MS Dhoni is set to play the IPL 2026 season for the CSK franchise, as reported by Revsportz. The report indicates that the legendary wicketkeeper-batter is influenced with the return of N. Srinivasan as CSK chairman. The 44-year-old recently played all 14 matches of the IPL 2025 season for CSK, scoring 196 runs in 13 innings at an astonishing batting strike rate of 135.17.

Ruturaj Gaikwad Knocks On Selection Doors With Century

Maharashtra veteran and CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad punched out a stellar century in the second semifinal of the Duleep Trophy 2025 season. Batting at number four for West Zone in Bengaluru, the cricketer packed 184 runs in just 206 balls with 25 regal boundaries and a huge six against the likes of Khaleel Ahmed, Deepak Chahar and star all-rounder Harsh Dubey. Gaikwad’s knock catapulted West Zone total to 363-6 from 87 overs by stumps on Day 1, as he presented a strong case for himself in landing a potential spot in India’s Test squad.

Shreyas Iyer Flops In Duleep Trophy 2025

Senior Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer failed to go big in his red-ball return, scoring just 25 runs for West Zone against Central Zone in the second semifinal of the 2025 Duleep Trophy season. The 30-year-old batter listed just four boundaries before he was cleaned up by Central fast bowler Khaleel Ahmed. Iyer’s latest setback put his Test return for Team India at further risk, considering he last graced the national red-ball jersey back in early 2024.

Shreyas Iyer’s failure, coupled with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Harvik Desai’s early dismissals gave Central Zone the morning advantage before Ruturaj Gaikwad century and Tanush Kotian’s sizzling 65* pushed the West Zone total past the 350-run mark before stumps.
