On Thursday, September 4, West Zone locked horns against Central Zone for the first semi-finals of Duleep Trophy 2025. In the ongoing match, West Zone, batting first, lost four early wickets and were stumped by Khaleel Ahmed's masterclass.

Notably, the CSK star got rid of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer. Both Indian stars failed to make a mark in the first innings. It was an important game for Shreyas, as the right-handed batter had a lot at stake, given that he is in consideration for the upcoming West Indies series.

Khaleel rattled Iyer's furniture, and the Punjab Kings' batter could only score 25 (28), which featured just four boundaries. Now, Iyer need to prove his mettle in the second innings to win the selectors' trust for the Windies series.

Shreyas Iyer has had a roller-coaster of a year, where he earned a lot of praise for his heroics in IPL, but failed to earn a place in India's Asia Cup squad, which starts from September 9 in the UAE.

Shreyas Iyer In Consideration For West Indies Series

Amid the ongoing justice cries for Shreyas Iyer, there are reports that the board is looking to rope in the 30-year-old in Test cricket. Iyer's last red-ball appearance came in 2024 against England, but the BCCI and selectors are eying Iyer for the two-Test series against West Indies on October 2.

"We need Iyer's class and experience in the middle order in all formats. It's something which we missed in England during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The selectors are aware that Iyer is an excellent player of spin bowling, which will be crucial in a home season that involves four Tests — two each against West Indies and South Africa," a source had remarked speaking to Times of India.

Talking about the ongoing match, at the time of writing this article, West Zone are batting on 187/5 with Ruturaj Gaikwad unbeaten on 94.
