The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is always full of drama and the high-profile nature of the series has often made it a career-defining one for many cricketers. The team that finds himself on the losing side, generally faces lot of flak and it has triggered some big changes over the years.
In the ongoing BGT, Australia are leading the series by 2-1 margin after losing the first Test and with the visitors struggling, plenty of reports of internal indifferences are floating up in media. Ahead of the final Test, there have been some big reports which has shaked Indian cricket and let's now see the timeline of those and its repercussions on the future of Indian cricket
1. Gambhir's Final Warning To Players
On the first day of 2025, a report from Indian Express claimed that Gambhir is not happy with the performance of the batting group. He lashed out at the batters for their horrid show in the second innings of the MCG Test and urged players to play according to the team plan and game situation rather than giving excuses of natural style of play after throwing away their wickets.
Rishabh Pant is one player who has faced lot of critcism in the recent past for his shot-selection while the seniors like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have also struggled big time.
2. Cheteshwar Pujara's Selection
The same Express Report also stated that Gautam Gambhir wanted Cheteshwar Pujara in India's BGT squad but selectors were not on the same page. Gambhir had even requested Pujara's selection after the win in Perth Test, but it did not materialise and it has shown that Gambhir and other stakeholders are not on the same page.
Also, there were some questions raised over selection of Harshit Rana and Washington Sundar in the opening Test, and according to the reports, those selections also lacked complete consensus.
3. Bumrah, Kohli In Focus (Senior Player Eyeing India Captaincy)
Jasprit Bumrah and Virat Kohli then came into focus when an Express Sports report revealed that a senior player is eyeing to take captaincy duties with Rohit Sharma struggling. The report states that the senior player believes that he can do the job better than youngsters who are still not ready to take the important role.
Jasprit Bumrah and Virat Kohli are the ones who are most likely to make such claims as they are both seniors with captaincy experience and success under their belt.
4. Rohit Sharma To Be Dropped - (Gambhir's PC, No Rohit In Slips)
The day before the game, the focus shifted to Rohit Sharma and his omission from the playing XI in the final Test at SCG. Gautam Gambhir came out for the press conference when generally the captain tends to address the media ahead of the game. Gambhir also did not come up with clear answer over Rohit's participation in SCG Test and stated that they will make the decision after looking at the surface.
Also, various videos and photos claimed that Rohit Sharma is not seen fielding at slips during the practice session. Gill, on the other hand, is part of that slip cordon which has raised hopes of his comeback in place of Rohit Sharma.
5. Rohit Sharma Opts Out Of 5th Test vs Australia
The latest report from Express Sports has claimed that Rohit Sharma has opted out of the fifth and final BGT Test. It states that Rohit has communicated his decision to Gautam Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar and Jasprit Bumrah will take over the leadership for the final Test.
