On this day in 1994, Sachin Tendulkar slammed his maiden century in One-Day International cricket. The momentous occasion came during India's high-voltage encounter against Australia in the Singer World Series at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Hailed for his stoic technique, Sachin Tendulkar made his international debut at a tender age following his batting exploits in the domestic circuit. Although he brought up his maiden Test ton a year after his debut, it took him quite some time to replicate a similar level of success in white-ball cricket.

A craftsman with the bat, Tendulkar started his ODI career as a middle-order batter but was eventually promoted to the top in order to capitalise on the field restrictions. His promotion was a boon for team India, as he went on to become the finest opener the world has ever seen.

Tendulkar's performance powered India to a respectable score

Renowned as the Master Blaster, Tendulkar went on to score a hundred centuries in international cricket. His tally of 49 ODI tons was the highest by any cricketer before Virat Kohli bettered it with a scintillating knock in the 2023 World Cup semifinal.

It was a long and challenging journey for the God of Cricket, who played 72 innings before finally breaching the three-figure mark in ODIs. And, needless to say, the hundred couldn't have come against a better opponent than the mighty Aussies.

Partnering with Manoj Prabhakar at the crease, Tendulkar unleashed a barrage of eight glorious boundaries and two magnificent sixes, crafting a 110-run masterpiece. His extraordinary effort propelled India to a competitive 246-run total on a spin-friendly Colombo deck.

Australia crumbled as India bowlers ran riot

In response, Australia were in a commanding position as long as Mark Waugh was batting in the middle. However, the flamboyant opener's dismissal opened the floodgates for the Aussies, with India wrapping up their tail in quick succession.

Thus, Tendulkar's maiden ODI ton didn't go in vain, leading India to an emphatic 31-run win in the multi-national tournament.
