Josh Hazlewood has been officially ruled out of the 2025-26 Ashes series owing to his injury. Tilak Varma became the fifth fastest Indian cricketer to complete 1,000 runs in T20Is. In other news, the BCCI has unveiled the entire list of the upcoming IPL 2026 auction.

Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Tuesday, December 9.

Hazlewood ruled out, Cummins confirmed for Ashes 2025-26

Amidst weeks of injury concerns, Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has been officially ruled out of the entire 2025-26 Ashes series. Hazlewood also did not make it to the Australian playing XI in the first two Tests owing to his injury. Captain Pat Cummins, meanwhile, is set to make his return to the Australian team for the third Test at the Adelaide Oval starting December 17 next week.

Pat Cummins last played for Australia back in July this year during his team’s three-match Test series in the West Indies. He has since missed all of Australia’s international fixtures as he was undergoing rehabilitation.

Mark Wood sidelined from remainder of the Ashes

England fast bowler Mark Wood has been sidelined from the remainer of the 2025-26 Ashes series following a recurrence of the left-knee injury he sustained during the series-opener in Perth last month. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has named 28-year-old Matthew Fisher as his replacement. Fisher has played just one Test match for England so far, doing so back in March 2022 against the West Indies in Bridgetown.

Mark Wood went wicketless in Perth, and was also ruled out of England’s playing XI from the second Test in Brisbane.

Harmanpreet Kaur, Mandhana to headline India squad vs SL

The women’s selection committee has named India’s 15-player squad for the upcoming five-match home T20I series against Sri Lanka Women. The series will mark India’s first international assignment since winning the 2025 ICC Women’s ODI World Cup at home last month.

Harmanpreet Kaur will continue to lead the Indian women’s team, and she will be accompanied by her deputy Smriti Mandhana. The series will be played between December 21 and December 30 across Vizag and Thiruvananthapuram.

IPL 2026 auction list revealed by BCCI

The player list for the upcoming IPL 2026 auction has been unveiled by the BCCI. Out of the 1,390 players who signed up for the auction, as many as 350 cricketers have been shortlisted and are set to go under the hammer later this month. The list includes 240 Indian players and 110 overseas stars. Out of those 240 players, 224 of them are uncapped cricketers.

All 10 franchises have a combined slot of 77 players to fill, including 31 slots reserved for overseas players. The highest base price remains Rs. 2 crores, with 40 cricketers choosing to enter the auction under this bracket.

Tilak Varma becomes fifth fastest Indian to 1,000 T20I runs

Through the course of his calculated cameo, the left-hander also completed 1,000 runs in his T20I career, doing so in just 34 innings to become the fifth fastest Indian cricketer to reach the landmark figure.
