Tilak Varma joins Kohli, Abhishek in huge feat; becomes 5th fastest Indian to 1000 T20I runs

India are in a state of bother against South Africa in the first T20I, but in the dark hour, left-handed batter Tilak Varma created history and etched his name in the history books. He reached a special T20I milestone and only 12 Indian stars have attained this feat. When Tilak smacked Marco Jansen for a boundary, he reached the milestone of 1,000 T20I runs.

Despite playing in a variety of positions, Tilak became the fourth-quickest Indian batter to attain this feat, with Virat Kohli leading the way for the Men in Blue. He bagged the feat in his 37th T20I and here is a list of Indians quickest to 1,000 runs in T20Is.

  • Legendary Indian batter, Virat Kohli tops the list as the two-time T20 World Cup Player of the Tournament, attaining the milestone in just 27 innings. The current Indian opener, Abhishek Sharma sits at the second place with 28 innings, while KL Rahul occupies the third spot in the list.
  • Suryakumar Yadav makes the list at fourth place as the T20I captain bagged the feat in 31 innings, and now Tilak has entered an exclusive list with 1,000 runs in just 34 innings.
  • Apparently, in terms of balls faced to reach 1,000 runs, Tilak is the fourth quickest, with Abhishek Sharma attaining the milestone in just 528 balls, while Tilak has done it in 691 balls, as Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya are the other two players who are ahead of him in the list.

Tilak Varma's T20I journey so far

In just two years' time, Tilak Varma, the MI star has gone from strength to strength, as it took him just a couple of years to attain the massive feat. He was instrumental in India’s Asia Cup 2025 triumph as the champion batter played a blinder to steer India through to hand them the title.

In just 37 T20Is, he has 1010 runs, with an average of 48.09 and a healthy strike rate of 144.49 as India once again bank on him to deliver the goods against the Proteas.
