The Indian team has been penalized by the ICC for maintaining a slow over-rate against South Africa in the second ODI. Indian T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has confirmed the return of Shubman Gill in the T20I series. In other news, Baroda batter Amit Pasi has created a huge world record in T20 cricket as a debutant.

Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Monday, December 8.

ICC punish India for slow over-rare in second SA ODI

Team India, under the leadership of stand-in captain KL Rahul, clinched the three-match ODI series against South Africa 2-1. However, the Indian team has now been slapped with a 10 percent fine for maintaining a slow over-rate during the high-scoring cracker in Raipur last week.

Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction, citing that KL Rahul and co. fell two overs short of their target despite taking time allowances into consideration.

Suryakumar Yadav confirms return of Shubman Gill vs SA

Indian T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has confirmed the return of Shubman Gill for the upcoming five-match series against South Africa. It is worth noting that Shubman suffered a neck spasm on Day 2 of the first Test in Kolkata last month, which prompted him to miss the remainder of the Test series as well as the entire ODI series. Suryakumar Yadav also confirmed that Shubman Gill will continue to open the innings alongside in-form Abhishek Sharma, thus, once again sidelining Sanju Samson from the top of the order in the process.

Baroda opener Amit Pasi hammers highest T20 score on debut

Baroda batter Amit Pasi bludgeoned 114 runs off just 55 balls with 10 fours and nine sixes at the Gymkhana Ground in Hyderabad against Services. Opening for Baroda in their Elite Group C match of the 2025-26 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy season, Pasi’s innings helped his team mount 220-5 in 20 overs, as the 26-year-old recorded the joint highest individual score in the history of T20 cricket on debut.

Amit Pasi levelled up with Bilal Asif, who also smeared 114 on his T20 debut back in May 2015 for the Sialkot Stallions in Faisalabad.

Shakib Al Hasan not “official retired yet”, wants to play for Bangladesh

Former Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has expressed his desire of representing his nation once again in international cricket. Notably, the legendary all-rounder has previously called it quits from Tests and T20Is, but now he wants to return and play at least one more series as a final goodbye to his fans and supporters.

Shakib Al Hasan has caught himself in a political turmoil in Bangladesh, and has not returned to his home country since the Awami League government was dethroned in August last year. A veteran of 71 Tests, 247 ODIs and 129 T20Is, the 38-year-old last played for Bangladesh back in October 2024.
