Rajasthan Royals (RR) clinched a three-wicket victory over Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Match 27 of IPL 2024 in Mullanpur on Saturday. This win marked their fifth win in six matches, solidifying their lead at the top of the points table.

After being sent in to bat, Punjab Kings struggled early on, with their top order failing to make an impact. However, valiant efforts from the middle and lower order enabled them to reach a total of 147/8 on a challenging slow pitch.

In their chase, Rajasthan Royals began solidly, but lost momentum due to a series of wickets in the middle overs. Despite this setback, Shimron Hetmyer remained composed and unleashed his dynamic batting to guide his team to a narrow three-wicket victory.

Here’s the timeline of how PBKS vs RR panned out in Mullanpur-

PBKS vs RR Highlights: PBKS Top Order Departs Cheaply

Atharva Taide and Jonny Bairstow opened the batting for the Punjab Kings, but neither could make a significant impact.

Taide was dismissed in the fourth over, by Avesh Khan and his replacement, Prabhsimran Singh, managed only a 14-ball 10 before being caught in the deep just after the Powerplay off Yuzvendra Chahal’s bowling.

Bairstow's struggle continued until the eighth over when Keshav Maharaj claimed his wicket. Maharaj didn't stop there; he also took down skipper Sam Curran for just six runs.

With Shashank Singh also falling cheaply for nine to Kuldeep Sen, the Kings found themselves reeling at 59/5 within the first 10 overs.

PBKS vs RR Highlights: Late Recovery and Finish

Despite the top-order collapse, Jitesh Sharma held one end, scoring a composed 29 before being dismissed by Avesh. Liam Livingstone, supporting Sharma, contributed 21 but was unfortunately run out in the 18th over.

The lower order saw some fireworks from Ashutosh Sharma, who, after being dropped in the penultimate over, exploited the reprieve to smash a quick 31 off 16 balls, propelling the Kings to a defendable total of 147/8.

PBKS vs RR Highlights: Steady Start by Jaiswal and Kotian

Yashasvi Jaiswal, finding his form, displayed aggressive batting in the powerplay against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) bowlers, while Tanush Kotian, on his debut, adopted a more cautious approach.

Their partnership ensured that Rajasthan Royals (RR) had a solid foundation, reaching 43/0 at the end of the Powerplay. Jaiswal's strokes were a significant boost for RR, considering his recent form.

PBKS vs RR Highlights: Livingstone and Rabada Swing Momentum

Liam Livingstone broke the opening stand by dismissing Kotian, who tried to accelerate but ended up getting bowled after scoring 24 off 31 balls.

Kagiso Rabada then quickly took centre stage, removing the well-set Jaiswal for 39 and then RR captain Sanju Samson for 18 in his successive overs.

Rabada's spell of 2/18 from his four overs placed RR under pressure, significantly shifting the game's momentum in favour of PBKS.

PBKS vs RR Highlights: Shimron Hetmyer Plays a Blinder

Despite losing Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel at crucial moments, West Indians Shimron Hetmyer and Rovman Powell stepped up in the crunch time.

With RR needing 30 runs from the last 14 balls, Hetmyer's quick scoring, including a four and a six off Harshal Patel, reduced the required runs significantly.

Although Powell was dismissed after hitting some vital boundaries in the penultimate over, Hetmyer remained undeterred and spectacularly finished the game.

The southpaw scored a cracking 27 off just 10 balls, ensuring RR won by three wickets in a thrilling last-over finish.
