In a desperate move that shakes the foundation of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has issued a formal termination notice to the Multan Sultans franchise. The decision places the team's future in the league in danger and triggers the process of finding a new owner ahead of the PSL's 11th season.

The drastic action reportedly stemmed from public criticism from the franchise's owner, Ali Tareen. According to PCB sources, the termination notice was delivered over an alleged breach of contract, directly linked to Tareen's recent statements, where he openly criticised the board's policies and the league's management.

Why PCB decided to terminate Multan Sultans?

The PCB's decision is a direct response to the owner's actions. Ali Tareen had used podcasts and social media platforms to voice his discontent with the PSL's operational structure and certain officials.

The board, after initially remaining silent, ultimately lost patience, concluding that these remarks violated the franchise's contractual obligations, reported Samaa TV.

The notice serves as both a suspension and a warning; if the dispute is not resolved amicably, the PCB will move to cut ties completely and appoint a new owner for the Multan franchise.

The history of instability for Multan Sultans

This is not the first time the Multan Sultans have faced termination. The franchise, which entered the PSL as its sixth team in 2017, was originally owned by Schon Properties. The PCB terminated that contract just a year later due to non-payment of fees, leading to the Tareen family acquiring the rights in 2018.

The current owners have also been operating under significant financial pressure. As the most expensive franchise in the league with an annual fee of approximately 1.25 billion rupees, the Sultans have been incurring consistent annual losses.

Their on-field performance in the PSL 2025 season was equally dismal, with the Mohammad Rizwan-led team finishing last with just one win in ten matches. Nevertheless, if the termination is finalised, the current owners will be barred from bidding for the new teams.
