The young opening pair of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran have made history by forming their third century partnership in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, this time against Australia. This marks the third instance of them achieving a 100-plus run stand in the tournament.

The Afghan openers have consistently provided a solid foundation for their team in the ongoing mega event. Their first major partnership was a 154-run stand against Uganda in the Group C opener, leading to a 125-run victory. They replicated this success with a 103-run partnership against New Zealand in Guyana.

Their latest century stand against Australia sets a new record, making them the first pair to achieve three century partnerships in a single World Cup edition. This feat surpasses the previous records held by pairs like Virat Kohli-Rohit Sharma and Adam Gilchrist-Matthew Hayden, and ties the record for most 100-run partnerships in T20Is, held by Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan.

Afghanistan's innings began cautiously due to challenging batting conditions. Gurbaz and Zadran navigated this period skillfully, gradually accelerating once they were set. Both players reached their fifties, contributing another impressive century partnership.

However, after Gurbaz's dismissal, Afghanistan experienced a mini-collapse, with the new batters struggling to maintain the momentum. Still, somehow they managed to post a total of 148 runs.

At one stage, they looked set to reach a total of 170-180, but their innings lost momentum when both openers were dismissed within the space of 8 balls.
