Glenn Maxwell became one of the many cricketers to be released by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) franchise on the day of IPL 2025 retention announcement on October 31. As it turned out, the franchise retained just three cricketers, including legendary batter Virat Kohli, and will be heading into the IPL 2025 mega auction with a purse of Rs. 84 crore.
Maxwell’s association with the franchise seems to have ended on good terms, as per his own admission. The dynamic Australian all-rounder recently confirmed that he had received a call from the RCB team management prior to the retention announcement itself.
Glenn Maxwell describes ‘beautiful exit’ from RCB
While speaking on Around the Wicket, Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell revealed that he had received news of his release from the RCB franchise through a call from Mo Bobat and head coach Andy Flower. Maxwell claimed that the two communicated their decision of not retaining him, and described the entire process a ‘beautiful exit’ from the franchise.
Earlier this year during the IPL 2024 season, Glenn Maxwell managed to score just 52 runs in nine innings for the RCB franchise at a dismal batting average of 5.77. The belligerent middle-order batter, however, did spent three prolific seasons with RCB from 2021 to 2023.
Apart from Maxwell, the franchise also did not retain the likes of team captain Faf du Plessis, premier fast bowler Mohammed Siraj, and blistering English batter Will Jacks. However, the aforementioned players can still make their respective returns to RCB for IPL 2025 via right-to-match cards.
The RCB franchise only retained three cricketers in the form of top-order batter Rajat Patidar, fast bowler Yash Dayal and modern-day batting legend Virat Kohli. Moreover, they shelled out Rs.21 crore for retaining Kohli, thus making him the highest-paid Indian cricketer to be retained by any franchise.
They will now enter the IPL 2025 mega auction with a purse of Rs. 84 crore.
