Virat Kohli and Indian captain Rohit Sharma have been advised by Mohammad Kaif to play Ranji Trophy fixtures in a bid to prep themselves for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024 Test series. Both Kohli and Sharma failed to notch up a single notable score between them during India’s recently-concluded home Test series against New Zealand.

The two Indian batting behemoths will soon be taking flight for Australia alongside the rest of their teammates for a series of five Test matches between November 22 and January 7.

Kaif urges Virat Kohli, Rohit to play domestic cricket

Former Indian batter Mohammad Kaif is of the opinion that out-of-form players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma can regain lost touch with the bat by scoring big in Ranji Trophy fixtures before the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series in Australia.

Sharing a video on social media, Kaif said:

“They need form and need to bat for hours there. If they score a hundred, it will benefit them immensely and serve as a morale booster.”

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma managed to tally just 93 and 91 runs respectively in six innings against New Zealand at home. Moreover, the two cricketers managed to list just one half-century each as Team India crashed to a rare 0-3 whitewash.

Kohli and Sharma also failed to notch up a single notable knock in India’s preceding two-match home Test series against Bangladesh, managing to tally just 99 and 42 runs respectively.

Their dismal performance against New Zealand, compounding in India’s 0-3 defeat, costed them big on the 2023-25 WTC points table as they slipped to number two on the standings. With crucial WTC points on the line, Team India need to make amends for recent failures by coming up with an inspired performance in Australia.

The first Test of India’s five-match series will be hosted by the Optus Stadium in Perth between November 22 and November 26.
