Former Sri Lankan Captain Suffers Severe Car Accident; Hospitalised Later

Sri Lankan cricketer Lahiru Thirimanne was involved in a frightening car accident on Thursday, March 14, resulting in minor injuries to him. 

The incident happened in the Thirapanne area of Anuradhapura. Following a collision with a truck, Thirimanne's vehicle suffered massive damage.

However, it has been reported that the former cricket player suffered minor injuries and has been spared from any major amputations.

Lahiru Thirimanne’s Challenging Times With SLC

Having stepped away from cricket in 2022, the left-hander has been out of touch with the game's developments. 

When Sanath Jayasuriya and TM Dilshan, the two giants of Sri Lanka Cricket were on their way out, Thirimanne suddenly found himself in the limelight, getting the nod from the selectors. 

Having debuted at the age of 21, he showed early promise and ended up being a regular in the Sri Lankan squad during his early years. Once Dilshan retired, Thirimanne became a reliable batter, but his batting positions were all over the place, mostly stuck in the top order. 

Later, he also went on to captain the national side in Angelo Mathews' absence. However, with several key Sri Lankan cricketers retiring at the same time, it wasn't an ideal period for Thirimanne to lead the team. 

The board's call to overhaul the setup and kickstart a new era of dominance meant that they went with Kusal Mendis, Avishka Fernando, and Pathum Nissanka in the top order, leaving Thirimanne out in the cold. He eventually hung up his boots in 2022.
