Lahiru Thirimanne Announces Retirement From International Cricket

Sri Lankan cricketer Lahiru Thirimanne bid farewell to his international career on Saturday, concluding a 12-year journey that has brought him much acclaim. 


Thirimanne retires from international cricket

The southpaw took to Facebook to officially announce his retirement, expressing his emotions in a profound statement. He reflected on the honour of representing his country on the international stage.

“It has been an absolute honour to represent my country for past few years. This game that has given me so much over the years. But with a lot of mixed feelings, I am here to announce my retirement from international cricket with an immediate effect,"  said the statement.

“As a player I have given my best, I have tried my best,I have respected the game and I have done my duty honestly and ethically to my motherland. It was a difficult decision to make, but I cannot mention here the many unexpected reasons that influenced me to take this decision willingly or unwillingly,” the statement added.

The left-hander also expressed his gratitude towards everyone who played a part in his career, including the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) members, his coaching staff, teammates, physios, trainers, analysts and fans.

Thirimanne had an illustrious career, playing in 44 Test matches where he accumulated 2088 runs with an average of 26.4 with three centuries and 10 half-centuries.

In the One Day International (ODI) format, he played 127 matches, scoring 3194 runs at an average of 34.7, including four hundreds and 21 fifties. He also donned the Sri Lankan jersey for 26 T20 Internationals, making 291 runs.
