Indian opener Smriti Mandhana secured yet another batting failure, this time falling for a two-ball duck against New Zealand Women in the second ODI of their three-match series. Turning up at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, Mandhana spooned an easy catch to Georgia Plimmer at point off Lea Tahuhu in just the opening over of a daunting run-chase.
Mere moments after Smriti Mandhana’s latest batting downfall, a legion of cricket fans took to social media and trolled the Indian vice-captain for her lean patch in international cricket off late.
Indian fans call for ouster of Smriti Mandhana
Smriti Mandhana was dismissed for just five runs in the series-opening first ODI match against New Zealand a couple of days ago in Ahmedabad. In a challenging chase of 260 runs at the same venue in the second ODI, the 28-year-old was toppled by Lea Tahuhu for a two-ball duck.
Earlier this month, Mandhana also spent the entirety of the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup in the UAE by tallying just 75 runs in four innings. Notably, the ‘Women in Blue’ veteran punched out 50 of those runs in a single innings against Sri Lanka, and secured unwanted failures in other must-win games against New Zealand, Pakistan and Australia.
Amidst her extensive lean path in international cricket, several fans are calling for her ouster from the Indian Women’s team. Taking to X, some fans even implied that Smriti Mandhana seems to be prioritizing off-field ‘commercials’, and urged the Indian selection committee to make way from ‘seniority quota’. Here is a look at some of the fans expressing their reactions to Smriti Mandhana’s latest batting failure:
Following the early dismissal of Smriti Mandhana, Team India also lost fellow opener Shafali Verma and middle-order batters Yastika Bhatia and Jemimah Rodrigues as the hosts slipped to 64-4 in 13.3 overs.
Earlier in the match, New Zealand Women hauled a competitive 259-9 from 50 overs courtesy of splendid half-centuries from Sophie Devine and Suzie Bates.
