Sri Lanka's cricket team has been dealt a blow ahead of their upcoming Test match against Bangladesh, as fast bowler Kasun Rajitha, who caused significant damage in the first Test, has been ruled out of the contest due to an unfortunate injury.

Bangladesh-Sri Lanka rivalry that cropped up during the ODI World Cup intensified in the ongoing bilateral series.

While Sri Lanka secured the T20 series, Bangladesh outclassed the visitors in the ODI series. Meanwhile, the series entered its last leg last week, with Sri Lanka registering a mammoth 328-run win in the first Test of the two-game series.

However, ahead of the second and final red ball game, the hosts suffered a massive setback. SLC announced earlier that Kasun Rajitha would not be available for selection due to an upper back injury.

The exact nature and extent of Rajitha's injury have not been disclosed by Sri Lanka Cricket officials. However, reports suggest that the fast bowler is nursing a back niggle that has prevented him from being fit for selection for the impending Test match against Bangladesh.

"Kasun Rajitha will not be available for the second Test match as the player has suffered an injury to his left upper back area," Sri Lanka Cricket said.

Notably, Kasun played a pivotal role in Sri Lanka’s first Test win.  He got the better of Bangladesh's batting unit with eight wickets combined in two innings, including a fifer in the second innings.

That being said, Asitha Fernando has been recalled as an immediate replacement. Fernando last met Bangladesh in 2022, wherein he finished with 10 wickets, and his last appearance in red-ball cricket happened in February against Afghanistan.

Sri Lanka will face Bangladesh in the second and final Test of the two-game series from March 30 at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram.
