Bangladesh and Mahmudullah etched an unwanted record when Pat Cummins became the fourth Australian to claim a T20I hat-trick during the Super Eight match between the two sides at Sir Viv Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua.
Winning the toss and opting to bowl, Australia delivered an exceptional bowling performance, restricting Bangladesh to 140 for 8 in their 20 overs. Bangladesh, sent in to bat first, struggled initially, finding themselves at 103/5 before being bowled out for a modest total.
In the 18th over, after conceding five runs off the first four balls, Cummins bowled a short ball outside off-stump that Mahmudullah chopped onto his stumps while attempting a pull shot. The next ball was pitched similarly, and Mahedi Hasan's uppercut found Adam Zampa at third man.
Returning for his fourth over, Cummins dismissed the in-form Towhid Hridoy with a slower bouncer.
Hridoy's attempt to shuffle across and ramp the ball ended up with a catch at short fine leg, completing Cummins' hat-trick on the first ball of the over.
Cummins celebrated ecstatically, marking his first hat-trick in T20Is. He also became the seventh bowler and the second Australian after Brett Lee to achieve a hat-trick in T20 World Cups.
While Cummins made history with his hat-trick, Bangladesh found themselves in the record books for all the wrong reasons. Cummins' hat-trick was the seventh against Bangladesh, the most against any team in T20Is.
Mahmudullah was dismissed in three of these instances, the most for any batter in the format. Additionally, Mahmudullah has now been involved in six hat-tricks in international cricket – three in T20Is, two in ODIs, and one in Tests – setting a new record.
