India skipper Rohit Sharma underlined the importance of having a player of Jasprit Bumrah’s calibre and using his four overs smartly after Bumrah's sensational spell of bowling helped India beat Afghanistan in their first Super 8 fixture of the T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados on Thursday, June 20.

Team India overcame challenging conditions and a formidable Afghanistan side to kick off their Super 8 campaign with a 47-run victory. Defending a total of 181, the Men in Blue bowled out Afghanistan for 134. Bumrah was the standout performer, taking three wickets for just seven runs in his 4-over spell, which included a maiden over. These are now his best bowling figures in T20 World Cups.

Since his debut in 2016, Bumrah has amassed 19 wickets in 14 T20 World Cup matches, boasting an impressive average of 15.78 and an economy rate of 5.59. The Hitman praised Bumrah for consistently showing his class and proving his worth as a world-class bowler.

“We know what Bumrah can do for us. It is important for us to use him smartly. He is the one who is ready to take the responsibility as well. Wherever he plays, he is always ready to take the responsibility,”  said Rohit Sharma in the post-match presentation.

In addition to Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh also impressed with a three-wicket haul. India's decision to include an extra spinner, Kuldeep Yadav, paid off, with the trio of Kuldeep, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel collectively taking four wickets.
