In a significant news coming out from CSK camp, the franchise is all set to replace Ruturaj Gaikwad with a 17-year-old Mumbai opener, Ayush Mhatre. The youngster has done well at the juinor levels and in domestic cricket recently, and has been in the radar for CSK since the IPL auction. Now, Cricbuzz has confirmed that the swashbuckling opener has got his maiden IPL contract and the decision was finalised on April 13.
Ayush Mhatre Preferred Over Prithvi Shaw As CSK Eye IPL 2025 Comeback
Earlier, Ayush Mhatre went unsold at his base price of 30 Lakhs in the mega auction, but there were reports that CSK were close to bidding for him. The young opener is likely to join the five-time champions in Mumbai and will be available for the encounter against MI, scheduled to be played on April 20.
The confirmation of Ayush Mhatre as replacement of Ruturaj Gaikwad means that Prithvi Shaw who was considered as a likely replacement of Gaikwad, continues to miss out. Shaw's power-hitting skills were expected to go in his favour with CSK struggling in IPL 2025, but the franchise has decided to go with a teenager who has shown similar penchant for aggressive batting in his brief career.
Who Is Ayush Mhatre?
Ayush Mhatre is a right-handed opening batter who bowls handy off-breaks as well. He was impressive in the U19 Asia Cup 2024 with 176 runs in five innings at a strike-rate of 135.28 and average of 44. He is yet to make T20 debut for senior Mumbai side, but has played first-class cricket and List A games for them.
In 16 first-class innings, Ayush Mhatre has 504 runs which includes two hundreds and one fifty while he has a stunning average of 65.42 in seven List A games for Mumbai. Thus, the 17-year-old has shown great consistency so far, and CSK fans would be hoping that his addition would provide them some relief amidst their struggles in IPL 2025.
