Pakistan's prominent speedster Shaheen Afridi had a memorable day with the ball, as he rattled Australia's top-order, getting prized scalps of the Australian openers. However, Afridi also committed a fielding blunder, dropping a straightforward catch and giving Matthew Short a lifeline in the must-win encounter.
The incident occurred during the fourth over of Australia's innings when Short was trying to form a consolidating stand along with veteran batter Steve Smith. Afridi, who had his tail up after dismissing Jake Fraser-McGurk, was fielding near the mid wicket boundary. Naseem Shah, who was operating from the other end, challenged Matthew Short with a short delivery.
As the swashbuckling batter loves to go aerial in the on-side, he attempted a pull shot in pursuit of six runs. However, he couldn't time it properly, with the ball travelling straight to Shaheen Afridi, stationed at deep mid wicket.
However, unfortunately for Naseem and Pakistan, the experienced pacer dropped a sitter, even failing to prevent a boundary. His dreadful fielding effort agonised Naseem, who expressed his frustration with an animated reaction.
Australia Lose Three Men As Labuschagne Joins Smith
Nevertheless, Shaheen's poor fielding didn't cost Pakistan, as he dismissed Short a few balls later. The visitors even managed to get rid of the in-form Josh Inglis quickly, as Haris Rauf made him his first victim of the day. After the keeper-batter's departure, Marnus Labuschagne joined Smith in the middle. At the time of writing, Australia were 85 for three, with Smith and Labuschagne batting on 27* and 6*, respectively.
