Bengal will continue their Ranji Trophy campaign under a new captain, the young wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel. He has been handed the leadership role for the upcoming match against Tripura, starting November 1 in Agartala.

The decision comes as Bengal will be without some of its key players. Abhimanyu Easwaran, the team’s regular skipper and one of Bengal’s most consistent performers, has been called up to represent India A in their second match against South Africa A.

Meanwhile, experienced opener Sudip Chatterjee will also miss the fixture due to a knee injury, leaving a big gap at the top of the batting order.

Despite the setbacks, Bengal will look to make a strong start to their Ranji Trophy season under Porel’s young and energetic leadership.

With his unusual calm approach behind the stumps and fearless batting, the 22-year-old Abishek Porel has already shown maturity beyond his years.

His capability to stabilise the innings and inspire his peers may be beneficial in a contest that would test Bengal’s depth and versatility.

The non-availability of star pacer Akash Deep, who is with the India A team as well, will make Bengal's pace attack dependent on Mohammed Shami, who bagged 8 wickets in the previous game against Gujarat.

Shami's form will be a boost to the team, especially to younger bowlers like Ishan Porel and Vikas Singh, who will be keen to seize the opportunity.

The Bengal selectors have opted for a blend of youth and experience by backing the 17-member squad, providing opportunities to many young talent like Saurabh Kumar Singh, Shakir Habib Gandhi, and Kazi Junaid Saifi to test their skills at the domestic level.

Significantly, Bengal have enjoyed a remarkable beginning to the Ranji Trophy 2025/26 season, as they have won 2 matches against Gujarat and Uttarakhand.
