Rising star Sam Konstas continues to struggle in Australia’s ongoing domestic home season. Playing for the New South Wales in a Sheffield Shield match against Queensland in Brisbane, Konstas left alone a cracking in-swinger from Hayden Kerr, only to get knocked over by the fast bowler for a sluggish 10 early on Day 2.
The 20-year-old has been enduring a string of low scores for the New South Wales, as he has aggregated just 81 runs so far from five innings this Shield season. Moreover, the cricketer failed to notch up a single half-century during Australia’s three-match Test tour of the West Indies a couple of months ago, with his collective setbacks now putting a serious dent in his Ashes ambitions.
Nightmare continues for Sam Konstas before The Ashes
Batting alongside fellow opener William Salzmann against Queensland bowlers in Brisbane, Sam Konstas struck a couple of confident boundaries early in his innings. Getting to 10 off 23 balls, a seemingly well-set Konstas left alone a scorching in-swinger from Hayden Kerr, and the Queensland fast bowler responded by knocking over the youngster’s stumps.

Sam Konstas’ latest batting failure this Sheffield Shield 2025 season puts him on a serious threshold of being overlooked for Ashes selection later this year. So far, the cricketer has accrued just 81 runs in his last five Sheffield Shield outings, which included 53 in a single innings against Victoria a couple of weeks ago.
While the youngster did score a century against India A bowlers on a high-scoring Lucknow surface last month, the innings was preceded by six straight failures against West Indies in the Caribbean between June and July.
Cricket Australia, meanwhile, is expected to name Australia’s squad for the upcoming Ashes 2025-26 series within the next few days. For now, Sam Konstas finds himself battling not just opposition bowlers, but also the mounting pressure to justify his prodigious promise ahead of the blockbuster Australian summer.
