On Tuesday, November 5, the BCCI released the list of registered players for the IPL 2025 mega-auction that will take place on November 24 and 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
As per the BCCI press release, 1574 players have registered for the upcoming mega-auction. While, the official list of players is awaited, there are reports that there are a few surprises in that list.
Notably, England's 42-year-old James Anderson is said to have registered for the mega-auction at a base value of 1.25 crores. It is to be seen whether a team would raise their paddle for the retired Englishmen. However, it must be noted that it is not the first time that Anderson has registered his name for the mega-auction.
In 2012, Anderson went unsold in the IPL auction ahead of the 2012 season, the first time he registered for the auction. He was in the second tier for the base price ($300,000) along with Alastair Cook, Mitchell Johnson and Mahela Jayawardene, but failed to attract any bids.
Thus, this article will look at three star cricketers who registered in the IPL auction in the past but never got picked.
1. Brain Lara
The West Indies legend, who dominated the ranking charts for a long, registered his name ahead of 2011 season, three years after he bid adieu to the game. He had the auction's highest base price at $400,000 but failed to attract any bids.
2. Mushfiqur Rahim
Bangladesh legend Rahim, who has often hogged the headlines for his animated gesture during The Tigers' clash against India, too tried to get a taste of the IPL by signing up for the IPL auction on three occasions – 2016, 2019 and 2020 but failed to get picked.
3. Mohammad Amir
It is worth noting that Mohammad Amir had registered for the IPL auction in 2010, but none of the Pakistani players found any team because of the geopolitical tensions between the two teams.
In recent times, there were reports that Amir might give up his Pakistani citizenship and take UK passport. If he had done that, he would have been eligible to play in the IPL.
