Glenn Maxwell failed to perform in IPL 2025 [Source: @WisdenIndia/X]
The 2025 season of the Indian Premier League witnessed an abrupt suspension, as the BCCI had to pause the tournament due to the military conflict between India and Pakistan. However, before the IPL 2025 was halted, several first-choice players were already sidelined from the tournament due to injury setbacks.
Swashbuckling Australian batter Glenn Maxwell had a forgettable season in the IPL 2025. Maxwell, who was purchased by Punjab Kings for a whopping price of INR 4.2 Crores in last year's mega auction, managed only 48 runs across six innings at a horrendous average of 8.
Maxwell has had two disastrous IPL seasons, scoring only 100 runs in his last 15 innings in the mega event. Considering he is 36 and has struggled with form and fitness of late, Maxwell might be released by PBKS ahead of the next auction.
Experienced Indian batter Nitish Rana showed glimpses of his batting prowess during the IPL 2025. Playing for Rajasthan Royals, Rana scored 217 runs at a blistering strike rate of 161.94 before a calf injury sidelined him from action.
Although he played a few quick-fire fifties, Rana was incredibly inconsistent in the tournament. He recorded five single-digit scores, while his other outings resulted in scores of 11, 12, 4* and 28, apart from two half-centuries.
Thus, considering his middling returns, RR might release Rana, as he was purchased for a price of 4.2 Crores. If they decide to buy him back, they can re-secure his services for a much lesser amount in the next auction.
3. Vansh Bedi - CSK
Young keeper-batter Vansh Bedi was ruled out of the IPL 2025 after sustaining an injury. Gujarat's explosive batter Urvil Patel was added to the squad as his replacement.
The opener instantly made an impact, hammering 31 runs off just 11 deliveries with the help of one boundary and four sixes.
Thus, given that Urvil capitalised on his very first opportunity, the Super Kings might retain him and release Vansh Bedi to the auction pool. They have also acquired Dewald Brevis and Ayush Mhatre, whom they will likely retain for their exploits in the tournament.
