On Sunday, May 4, Punjab Kings announced that Glenn Maxwell, who fractured his finger a few days ago, has been officially ruled out of the remainder of the tournament. The Kings also named BBL hero Mitchell Owen as Glenn Maxwell's replacement.
Notably, the 23-year-old rose to fame during Big Bash League, where Own was Hobart Hurricanes top-scorer and also led his side to maiden BBL title. The right-hand batter amassed 452 runs in 11 innings, averaging 45.20.
However, much to fans' disappointment, Owen will not feature for PBKS in their upcoming match against LSG on May 4. Meanwhile, this article will shed light on why Maxwell's replacement won't play against LSG.
Why Mitchell Owen Won't Play Against LSG?
It is worth noting that Owen, who had registered for IPL 2025 late, failed to get any interest and was not even shortlisted for the final list of the IPL 2025 mega-auction. Meanwhile, PSL showed interest in Owen and Peshwar Zalmi signed him during the draft.
Thus, owing to their commitment to PSL, Owen will join Punjab Kings after completing his games for Peshawar Zalmi. Notably, Owen and Zalmi have played seven games and placed 5th on the table. ESPNcricinfo reported that Owen will travel to India as soon as Zalmi's season comes to an end. Zalmi will play their final group-stage match on May 9. If Zalmi qualify for the playoffs, Owen's PSL commitments could run until the final on May 18 and would join the Shreyas Iyer-led side only for the playoffs.
Talking about Owen's numbers during IPL 2025, he has failed to replicate his Big Bash League success and amassed just 101 runs in six innings.
