The year 2025 was contrasting for both India and Pakistan in terms of results. Both sides played a plethora of matches across formats and while India tasted success in white-ball cricket, Pakistan were average in ODIs and T20Is and lacked the cutting-edge in Tests.
With 2025 coming to an end, we review how the two teams fared across formats (Tests, ODIs, and T20Is), and a number will be given out of 5 to justify their performances throughout the year.
How India fared across formats in 2025
In Tests
India started the year with a crushing defeat at the hands of Australia in the fifth Border-Gavaskar Trophy match. The Indian side lost the match by 6-wickets and eventually lost the series, 1-3 as the team failed to qualify for the WTC finals.
After the tour, a new captain was appointed in Shubman Gill, and under his guidance, India took England to the limits in their backyard as the 5-match Test series ended, 2-2. This was a positive aspect for India as they continued the momentum at home against the West Indies, winning 2-0.
However, the horrors of 2024 returned in the home series against the Proteas as the Temba Bavuma-led side inflicted a whitewash and India lost the Test series, 2-0.
Conclusion: while the series against England was the high point in 2025, but a whitewash at home ruined India's 2025 in red-ball cricket, and out of 5, India will get 2 points.
In ODIs
The year started with a comprehensive series win over England at home, and then came the crowning moment as India remained undefeated in the Champions Trophy and defeated the Kiwis in Dubai to clinch the trophy.
However, the next ODI series away from home was not that fruitful for India as they lost the ODIs, 2-1 away from home. But after losing against the Aussies, India immediately bounced back and defeated the South African side, 2-1 at home to end the series on a high.
With just one series loss and a Champions Trophy win, India get a solid 4 out of 5 in ODIs this year.
In T20Is
Just like the ODIs, India were undefeated in every series they played in the T20Is this year. The journey started by thrashing England at home, and it was followed by the Asia Cup finale win over Pakistan in Dubai.
It was then followed by another convincing T20I win vs Australia and South Africa as the Suryakumar Yadav-led side were sublime this year, and hence, the team gets a solid 5 out of 5 in the T20Is this year.
How Pakistan fared across formats in 2025
In Tests
Pakistan started the year on a rocky note in Tests as the team was crushed by South Africa in a relatively one-sided contest. It was then followed by the home series against the West Indies on a dustbowl. The Men in Green won the first Test, but the Windies turned the tables and knocked over Pakistan in the series decider to level 1:1.
Their next Test series took place at home against South Africa and the same script was repeated. Their spinners ran riot against the Proteas in the first Test, but the reigning WTC champions bounced back to clinch the second Test as the series ended, 1:1.
For their topsy-turvy T20I performance in 2025, Pakistan get 2 out of 5 in the rating.
In ODIs
In the ODIs, the year 2025 was a disaster for the Men in Green. They started the year by losing in the tri-nation tournament before the Champions Trophy, and it was followed by another disappointing tournament as the team crashed out of the group stage in the Champions Trophy event, losing against India.
The team then witnessed a change in guard as Mohammad Rizwan stepped down from the captaincy post and Shaheen Afridi was appointed the leader.
In the home ODI series against South Africa and Sri Lanka, the Pakistan side won the series comfortably as they eventually ended the format on a high. However, for their disastrous Champions Trophy campaign, the team once again gets 2 out of 5.
In T20Is
Unlike the other two formats, Pakistan had a better year in T20Is. After the Champions Trophy, Pakistan’s focus shifted towards the T20Is, but things started on a sour note as they lost against New Zealand away from home and were outplayed by Bangladesh. In between, they defeated the Tigers at home, and were also victorious in the tri-nation series, featuring the UAE and Afghanistan, and the away T20Is vs West Indies.
In the Asia Cup 2025, the team reached the finals, but they lost against arch-rivals, India in the group stage, Super 4, and then in the finale as the Men in Green suffered a heartbreaking defeat.
After the Asia Cup, the Men in Green defeated the Proteas in home T20Is, and it was followed by yet another tri-nation finale win, this time involving Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe.
Overall, the Pakistan side did better in T2OIs as compared to the other two formats and hence, they deserve a 3.5 rating out of 5.
Conclusion
If India and Pakistan are to be compared in 2025, it is clear that India were the better side, having delivered in two out of three formats. The Men in Blue won two multi-nation tournaments, while Pakistan failed to do anything significant.
However, both sides struggled in red-ball cricket, but because India were outstanding in the white-ball formats, they have pipped Pakistan to become the better team in 2025.
