Nothing is going right in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) as Multan Sultans have come under PCB’s control, and the board will manage the franchise for the next year before giving away the team in a bidding process. In such uncertainty surrounding the franchise, news has circulated that captain Mohammad Rizwan has stepped down from his post before the PSL 2026 season.

PCB took control of the Multan Sultans after the owner, Ali Tareen, made his exit from the franchise due to financial reasons.

Busting claims that Rizwan has resigned from Multan Sultans captaincy

As a result, the team came directly under the supervision of PCB. On Monday, social media was flooded with reports that Mohammad Rizwan has parted ways with the franchise as skipper but he will continue to be a part of the team as a player.

The news spread like wildfire, but after a bit of research, it was concluded that the reports circulating on social media are false and there is no official statement - either from Rizwan’s camp or from the Multan Sultans team. Journalists who work in Pakistan media clarified that such reports are not true and Rizwan will remain skipper of the team.

How Multan Sultans have fared under Rizwan's captaincy

Under the leadership of Mohammad Rizwan, Multan Sultans have been a successful franchise, having done well in the last 6 years. In the 2021 edition, the Sultans defeated Peshawar Zalmi to clinch the title, and in the next three years, the team showcased their domination and reached the finale, only to lose the final hurdle.

Their streak was ended in the 2025 season when the side failed to reach the finals and were knocked out earlier.

Will team uncertainty affect Rizwan, the leader?

As of now, there is no official confirmation regarding Rizwan’s captaincy future with the Sultans, but the uncertainty surrounding the team could affect him as a leader and as a batter.

The team will be micromanaged by PCB, and this could genuinely affect Rizwan and the entire side as they need a motivation to win the championship, next year. How the team will be managed? who will manage the team could potentially decide how Sultans and Rizwan deliver in the PSL 2026 season.
